THC Tinctures 101
What are cannabis tinctures?
Cannabis tinctures are an easy and convenient way to consume THC. They are made by combining cannabis extract with a carrier liquid. Sunset Lake Cannabis uses organic MCT coconut oil as the carrier oil. Other types of tinctures may be made with alcohol as the carrier liquid, but we find that using MCT oil is a more pleasant experience. Cannabis tinctures may also be called “marijuana tinctures,” “THC drops,” or “weed tinctures.”
What type of extracts are in Sunset Lake Cannabis tinctures?
Our full-spectrum cannabis extract is made by soaking our sungrown cannabis in a cold ethanol bath. The ethanol pulls the cannabinoids and terpenes from the plant material. For our THC blends, the extract is made from our cannabis plants. For blends which contain CBD, we add in extract made in the same way from our sungrown hemp plants. The CBN in our Sleep Blend is sourced from hemp and is in isolate form.
What are cannabis tinctures used for?
Cannabis tinctures are highly versatile and allow the user to easily adjust their dose. This ability to “titrate” your dose to the exact level desired makes them a great choice for folks using cannabis therapeutically. Tinctures also offer a discrete way to consume cannabis since they have very little smell and don’t need any additional equipment to be enjoyed.
How do I use cannabis tinctures?
Using the included graduated dropper, measure out your desired dose of cannabis oil.
For fastest onset we recommend taking the oil sublingually (under the tongue). Dispense the oil underneath your tongue and then holding it there for approximately 30 seconds. This method allows some of the oil to absorb into your blood stream via the veins under your tongue. Swallow any remaining oil. When you take THC drops sublingually you can expect to start feeling the effects in as little as 15-30 minutes.
For slower onset simply swallow the oil. It will travel to your stomach and then to your liver before entering your bloodstream. If you’d rather not taste the cannabis tincture, you can add it to your favorite drink or a food item. When you swallow THC drops, the onset time is similar to THC edibles. Effects typically start 45-60 minutes after ingestion for most people.
Please note that you should start low and go slow until you know how cannabis tinctures will affect you. The effects of edible cannabis can be delayed by two hours or more, depending on your metabolism and other factors such as if you have an empty stomach and how hydrated you are.
