At Sunset Lake Cannabis, we cultivate a carefully selected lineup of cannabis cultivars at our outdoor farm in South Hero, Vermont. Each cultivar, or “strain,” is chosen for its exceptional genetics, expressive terpene profiles, and a natural affinity for sungrown production. As part of our ongoing Cultivar Spotlight Series, we take an in-depth look at the strains we grow so that you can make informed, confident choices when you’re at the dispensary. In this installment, we're putting Hella Jelly in the spotlight, one of the fruitiest, most vibrant cultivars we've ever had the pleasure of growing under the Vermont sun.

Hella Jelly Fast Facts

Type: Sativa

Breeder: Humboldt Seed Company

Lineage: Notorious THC × Very Cherry

THC Content: 21.73%

Terpene Content: 2.50%

Dominant Terpene: Myrcene

Hella Jelly is a Sativa strain bred by the legendary Humboldt Seed Company, a California-based breeder widely celebrated for producing stable, terpene-rich genetics with strong jar appeal. If you've already gotten to know our All Gas OG or Blueberry Muffin, you already have a sense of how consistently excellent Humboldt Seed Company’s work is.

Hella Jelly, formerly known as Jelly Rancher before Humboldt Seed Company rebranded it, was the winner of Humboldt Seed Company's prestigious 2019 Phenotype Mega-Hunt, a rigorous selection process in which countless phenotypes are evaluated and only the best rises to the top. Its parentage tells the whole story: Notorious THC is a potent, Indica-leaning cross of Humboldt OG and Caramel Cream, bringing serious horsepower to the equation; Very Cherry is a mostly-Sativa Hybrid of Lemon Kush and an old-school Northern California headstash strain, contributing the bright, fruity, candy-sweet character that makes Hella Jelly so immediately recognizable.

Hella Jelly Aroma, Flavor & Appearance

If you've ever opened a bag of cherry candy or wandered past a farm stand piled high with ripe summer fruit, you have a rough idea of what opening a jar of Hella Jelly is like. This is one of the most aromatically expressive strains we've grown at Sunset Lake Cannabis to date, and even seasoned weed aficionados tend to stop and take a second sniff.

The aroma bursts with black cherry soda, ripe grapes, fresh mango, and cotton candy, and is balanced by warm baking spices, vanilla and a hint of mint. There's an almost hashy warmth lurking underneath all that fruit that keeps things from tipping into pure candy territory.

The flavor follows the aroma closely and is one of Hella Jelly's most discussed qualities among marijuana enthusiasts. On the inhale, sweet berry flavors come forward immediately, with hints of sugary grape and tropical mango jelly layered behind them. The exhale delivers a pleasant citrus and earthy finish that lingers on the palate. The smoke is rich, layered, and deeply satisfying. Cannabis users who prioritize flavor alongside potency consistently rank this strain among their favorites.

Visually, our sungrown Hella Jelly stands out with dense buds, displaying a range of greens from bright neon to softer sage, with hints of yellow and lavender, vivid orange pistils, and a heavy coating of amber and glassy trichomes.

What Does Hella Jelly Feel Like?

Hella Jelly earns its reputation as a high-powered Sativa while avoiding being frantic or overwhelming. It delivers a focused, euphoric, and deeply enjoyable experience that consumers return to again and again. The onset is quick and cerebral, with an immediate rush of motivation and mental clarity, a brightening of mood and sharpening of focus that lands with purpose. Cannabis enthusiasts who use this strain before creative projects, outdoor activities, socializing, or getting through a long to-do list frequently report that it delivers exactly the kind of clear-eyed motivation they were looking for.

As the experience progresses, the Indica genetics from the Notorious THC side of the family begin to make themselves known, softening the edges of the initial Sativa buzz into something warmer and more grounded. But this is not the kind of weed that parks you firmly in-da-couch; experienced consumers describe it as landing in a satisfying middle ground where the mind remains engaged and the body relaxes without sedation.

Because of its energizing onset, Hella Jelly is a particularly strong candidate for daytime and early-afternoon use. Vermont cannabis consumers who reach for it in the morning before a hike on the Long Trail, during a creative session, or before a social gathering tend to find it well-matched to those moments. As the high evolves toward its warmer, more relaxed second chapter, it transitions naturally into an excellent late-afternoon strain for unwinding after a productive day. It's an all-day companion that shifts gears with you rather than forcing you to shift gears around it.

Hella Jelly Cannabinoid & Terpene Profile

Every batch we harvest is sent to a Vermont third-party laboratory for cannabinoid, terpene, heavy metals, and pesticide testing, and those results are available on our Certificates of Analysis page. Below are the cannabinoid and terpene profiles for our 2025 outdoor harvest of Hella Jelly.

Total Active Cannabinoids: 25.84%

Total Terpene Content: 2.50%

The 2025 harvest of Sunset Lake Cannabis Hella Jelly is a robust expression of this cultivar's full potential. The total cannabinoid content of 25.84% with 21.73% being THC places it firmly in the upper tier of our current lineup. The minor cannabinoids are worth noting as well: CBG and CBC add additional nuance to the overall effect profile through what researchers describe as the entourage effect, the theory that cannabinoids and terpenes work together to shape the overall character of a cannabis experience in ways that THC alone cannot.

The terpene profile is where Hella Jelly truly distinguishes itself. At a total of 2.50%, this is a genuinely aromatic strain, and the composition of those terpenes explains a lot about why this weed smells and feels the way it does. Myrcene leads the terpene profile, partially accounting for the mango quality in the aroma while contributing the grounding undercurrent that softens Hella Jelly's edges as the experience matures. beta-Caryophyllene follows, adding warmth and the baking spice aromas that deepen the fruit-forward profile. Fans of hoppy Vermont IPAs will recognize Humulene, as the same compound that gives hops their musky character. Humulene adds an herbal, earthy balance that rounds out what we describe as a motivating-yet-calm experience.

Rounding out the top five, Bisabolol contributes a soft floral sweetness (think chamomile), while Limonene adds the bright citrus lift that keeps this strain from feeling one-dimensional. Taken together, these five terpenes form a cohesive profile that explains why Hella Jelly smells like a fruit candy shop, smokes like a dessert, and delivers a focused, energizing experience that is also warm and comfortable.

Why Vermont Cannabis Consumers Love the Hella Jelly Strain

Hella Jelly has earned a devoted following since its debut, and the reasons aren't hard to guess. In a cannabis marketplace where high-THC cultivars are plentiful but truly distinctive flavor profiles are rarer, Hella Jelly stands out by delivering both. It's one of those strains that wins people over through the nose before they've even taken a hit, and then backs up that first impression with a high that's genuinely enjoyable and versatile.

If you already enjoy Sativa-leaning strains like Terp Poison, Bermuda Triangle, or Jelly Donutz (which is a descendant of Hella Jelly!), then Sunset Lake Cannabis Hella Jelly belongs in your grinder. And if you're new to the Sativa side of things, Hella Jelly is as approachable and enjoyable an introduction as you'll find.
